'TOPIA:

A Re-Invention Of The Self'

SERENA MORTON GALLERY

20 SEP - 20 OCT 2019

This is the first time that I have thought of a title , and made works of multimedia that would respond to this title/theme, at least for an exhibition.

It all started with the internet.

The internet fascinates me.

Here is this platform, this ‘other world’ that is now simultaneously existing whilst we are at work, school -sleeping, making love or sadly saying goodbye to loved ones , and what’s more, the internet will create or duplicate its own versions of these things.

The internet has empowered and disempowered , seen the rise of children fighting climate change and showing us at the same time adults bullying children (behind a screen), for doing so, all for the world to see and comment with a hashtag.

We see a celebrity president proclaiming agendas in a tweet/s and marriage proposals made for all to see.

Our world has changed, and if our world has changed what has happened to art?

Our world, I think,  is looking for perfection and the internet wants to give this to us, it is a reminder about the need for perfection, for a perfect world, a ... Topia.

But what about art?

I wanted to go back to basics but let the ‘basics’ be a fusion of something new, so a mixture of ideas that make up one. That, maybe a perfect world is not the compete removal of our reality and to escape into another but, to acknowledge truth, stare at it in the face and respond to it... honestly. The exhibition will therefore be a mixture of paintings, film, drawings and other media

TRAILER FOR, POEM THREE: WORDS Poem Three, journeys through the heart and mind of an individual who examines the power of words within the context of a relationship that has broken down.

PRAH Foundadtion
Residency | December 2017

Adébayo Bolaji, spends time at the PRAH Foundation in Margate to explore new ideas.

In his own words.... "I never go in with 'a plan' as such, the plan is always to listen and respond honestly to my environment. However, in terms of form - I would say that my recent obsession with petroglyphs and ancient Egypt culture is still playing a part in how I visually execute my work-albeit in a contemporary context".

Bolaji & Muriani Oyelami
20 April - 19 May 2017

Presented as a dialogue show, Bolaji and Oyelami is a study in influence and similitude in modern and contemporary artistic production. Presented side-by-side, early works on paper by the older Oyelami read as a perfect precursor to large canvas paintings by the younger Bolaji. Without ever directly referencing the older artist, Bolaji seems to be channelling their shared Yoruba heritage In his new body of work.

Below is a selection of works and installation shots of Bolaji's work.
